Making Christmas Happen by Susan Sayers £7.99
This is the advent book that I did last year and I can recommend it to any working mother wanting desperately to keep her focus at Christmas! But I could also recommend it to anyone not wanting to take on too much advent reading but who is very much involved in the preparations for Christmas. There are daily readings and at the end of every week something to think about and pray about. It is very rewarding to finish something instead of feeling defeated by it and that’s another bonus about this shorter advent title.
The Incredible journey by Steve Brady £7.99
Steve Brady is the author of this years BRF title which is always the best selling advent book in The Vine. This book shows how Jesus has come to take us home to God no matter what our starting point and explores this astonishing invitation. The book has material for groups which are available as a free download. Steve Brady is principal of Moorlands Bible college, a popular speaker and trustee of Keswick ministries.
Why wish you a merrry Christmas – What matters and what doesn’t in the festive season by Nick Baines £6.99
I have just been dipping into this as I’ve been writing and it’s very readable. It’s described as funny and thought provoking and I imagine it would be a good read to give to someone who is wondering if there is anything more than consumerism to Christmas. It would also be a good read to help you cope with all the shopping and distraction that draws you away from the truth of the Nativity. Nick Baines is the Bishop of Croydon and a popular broadcaster and musician.
Ready Steady Slow £4.99
A series of contributions from well known authors make up this short book. Everyday through December there is a reading, a prayer and a reflection coupled with a challenge to live more simply and to tread more gently.
The Meaning is in the Waiting by Paula Gooder £8.99
This is the book I plan to do this year - I toyed with it last year but feel I am up for doing 107 pages this year although it is early days yet! I love the title and the description is that “in the company of the biblical characters with whom the candles on the Advent wreath are traditionally associated, we discover very different kinds of waiting”. I think I might learn a lot.
Follow that star by Susan Sayers £7.99
This is described as an “Advent calendar for adults and children through time and space for grown ups who travel with questions about God and the universe”. It also describes that with this book you can “get yourself mentally fit for Christmas this year by exploring what it means to be a child of the universe with stardust in your veins!” How awesome! I am very tempted to give this one a go.
